Creating the Extraordinary Student Experience

Mirror Lake jump

Dear Ohio State Student,

Please don't jump in Mirror Lake.

The Mirror Lake jump is not a university-sponsored event, and it is definitely a high-risk activity.  My best advice is that you not participate.  I recognize, however, that some of you are not going to take that advice, so if you are planning to jump in the lake Tuesday night, please read this. To summarize: no diving or pushing, beware of hypothermia, travel in a group and look out for each other, know that alcohol intake greatly increases risks of injury.

Because we care about you, the university is taking a number of precautions Tuesday night, including adding lights and having police officers and medics as well as a number of Student Life staff members on site.  Ask for help if you need it and obey instructions from officials, but know that you are responsible for your own safety.

I recognize that this is a significant event for many, and thus we do not stop you from participating as long as you do not create excessive risks to yourself or others.  Those who endanger others, destroy property, or violate alcohol laws will be subject to possible citation or arrests by police and summons to Student Conduct.

There are other activities this Beat Michigan Week that I can endorse.  Show your school spirit in positive ways such as donating to the blood battle and penny drive and coming to the pep rally on Monday.  If you're fortunate to have tickets to the game in Ann Arbor, cheer loud and proud for the Buckeyes and represent Ohio State with enthusiasm and good sportsmanship.

Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, university classes and offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday and many university facilities will be operating on shortened hours over the four-day period.  RPAC, the Ohio Union, Campus Dining locations, and the libraries are among the many university operations that will have special hours, so check online or by phone for open times. If you are staying on campus over the holiday weekend, you can join the community Thanksgiving dinner at the Ohio Union-get your free ticket by Wednesday.

Have a great week, enjoy the holiday, and Go Bucks!
