Dear Partners in Student Success,

Incidents in recent weeks have shown that our students need support even in summer. While this time of year on campus often means a slower pace for many of us, it is a reminder that our work never really takes a break. I am, as always, grateful for your partnership

Support Resources

After the recent series of mass shootings around the country, President Johnson and I sent a message of support to students whose home addresses are in the state of New York, Southern California, Milwaukee and the Greater Houston area. The emails included links to some of the resources available through the university. Here is part of what we wrote to them:

“These are troubling times and we want to remind you that it is okay to not be okay and to ask for help. If you are looking for or need support, please know we are here for you. Counseling and Consultation Service (CCS) has a list of resources on their website that are available 24/7. You can also access the support and resources provided by the Student Wellness Center, the Student Advocacy Center and the Multicultural Center.”

Drug and alcohol resources

Student Life offers a number of resources for those concerned about alcohol and drug misuse. Student Wellness Center has several programs designed to help students address substance use, including the Collegiate Recovery Community for students in or seeking long-erm recovery. Student Health Services has free Naloxone kits and fentanyl test strips available, and they have a Drug Take Back Box in their lobby during regular office hours.

Summer Hours

Many Student Life public-serving facilities are now on their summer hours schedule. The locations and hours for Dining Services locations are online. You can also check online for the schedule at eachRecreational Sports facility and the Ohio Union.

FGEN

The First Generation Envisioning Network (FGEN) program through Buckeye Careers begins June 6. The fully virtual program allows first-generation students to explore their personal and career-related goals. Students will meet weekly over Zoom for about three hours total per week. During this time, students will participate in career development sessions, including strategic goal setting, mock interviews, resume reviews and financial wellness sessions.

Off-Campus Housing Network

Each year, thousands of Ohio State students move into off-campus rental properties, many never having faced the challenge of finding a new place to live. Student Life’s Off-Campus Housing Network will launch this fall. The Off-Campus Housing Network is a collaboration across our community that will support an iconic off-campus residential experience. Property owners that participate in the Off-Campus Housing Network will commit to pre-determined criteria and be considered in-network with exclusive access to Network benefits. In addition, students and families will have access to information about in-network properties to help them make informed decisions about where to live.

NPHC Plaza

This fall, the university will officially unveil the National Pan-Hellenic Council Plaza on campus, recognizing the contribution and impact NPHC has made on the campus community over the years. It will celebrate the nine historically Black, Greek-lettered fraternities and sororities at Ohio State, known as the Divine Nine. Hear what this space means to members of our community. Contributions to the endowment fund will support NPHC programming for current and future Buckeyes, as well as ensure the plaza’s care and upkeep for many years to come. Engraved bricks are also available for purchase. To contribute to the effort, visit the Project Excellence Buckeye Funder page.

I hope you are having a Scarlet and Great summer, and in August I will have more news and notes for you In a Nutshell.
