Your Student Life: Feeling Homesick? You're Not Alone
September 8, 2026
Being at Ohio State can be exciting, but it can also bring unexpected feelings of homesickness. Whether you're from a small Ohio town or across the globe, missing family, friends, pets and familiar routines is a normal part of adjusting to college life.
The first thing to remember is that homesickness does not mean you made the wrong decision. In fact, many students experience it during their first few weeks on campus. Transitioning to a new environment takes time, and it's okay to feel a mix of excitement and uncertainty.
One of the best ways to ease homesickness is to get involved. Attend campus events, join a student organization, explore campus or study with classmates. Building new connections can help Columbus start to feel like home. At the same time, stay in touch with family and friends through calls or video chats, but try to balance that with fully engaging in your new community.
Creating a routine can also help. Regular meals, exercise, study time and sleep provide a sense of stability during a period of change. If you're feeling overwhelmed, remember that support is available. Ohio State's Let's Talk program offers free, confidential, one-on-one consultations with counselors for currently enrolled students. These informal 15 to 20-minute conversations can be a great way to talk through homesickness, stress, or adjustment challenges and learn about additional campus resources. Most importantly, be patient with yourself. Adjustment doesn't happen overnight. With time, new friendships and new experiences, you'll likely find that Ohio State becomes a place where you feel comfortable, confident, and connected.
