February 8, 2024

DearStudent Life team,

When I came to Ohio State four years ago, one of the first major events I attended was the BuckeyeThon Dance Marathon. What an amazing introduction to the Buckeye experience I now know and love.

This weekend, we again gather in the Ohio Union for the Dance Marathon. 2,000 dancers will be on hand Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. I can’t wait!

Some things you probably know about BuckeyeThon: It is the largest student-run philanthropy in the state of Ohio. It is an official program of Student Life. The mission is to raise funds and awareness for kids fighting cancer, blood disorders and other pediatric illnesses. It focuses on children treated in the Hematology, Oncology and Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital that will treat any child regardless of a family’s ability to pay.

All these things are rightfully important. Of equal significance, however, are the lessons our students are being taught by being involved in BuckeyeThon. Through the work of Student Life’s department of Student Philanthropy, students are exposed to the benefits of giving back, not just to the receiver but to the giver as well.

Engaging in philanthropy helps students explore who they are, identify their values and develop as a citizen of the world. It teaches civic engagement and awareness of social issues. It helps students understand the cultural and financial impact of altruistic behavior and fosters an attitude of gratitude.

In short, participating in programs like BuckeyeThon and other offerings through Student Philanthropy are vital to student development.

Student Life has always played a large role in helping the students both raise money and grow from the experience. I am grateful for that. Your support, in both time and treasure, are important to BuckeyeThon. You can still donate to the cause

I hope you will support this year’s effort and be a part of this Scarlet and Great movement to create millions of miracles together.
