Creating the Extraordinary Student Experience

Message from Melissa Shivers, Vice President for Student Life - Tuesday, June 2

Dear Ohio State Students:

Over the past several days, I have been so disappointed to see backlash against those who are standing for justice by using their voices (not violence or looting) or against those who are reporting on the voices being challenged. As Mayor Ginther recently shared, if you feel you have been mistreated by the Columbus Division of Police during these last few days of protest and do not want to file with the Internal Affairs Bureau, you can email the information to reportCPD@columbus.gov.

President Drake and I both shared messages along with many deans, university administrators and your peers to acknowledge the deep pain, anger and hurt that the murder of George Floyd, and others before him, has caused our campus community, the Black community and many other communities around the nation, and even the world. I am truly exhausted of reading that another mother or father has lost their child. Over the past several days, countless individuals of all backgrounds have spoken out in myriad ways, from participating in demonstrations to sharing their voices through social media. Your undergraduate, graduate and professional student government leaders have joined together to present a series of action steps they would like the university to take in forging a stronger and better Ohio State.

We appreciate the student leaders’ advocacy and their great passion for building and improving our community. We unequivocally share the concerns and steadfast commitment to ensuring the safety and respectful treatment of our students. Please know we are carefully reviewing the recommended actions, with a specific eye toward intentional, thoughtful and sustainable plans. While we understand the sense of urgency, we must also establish plans that are longstanding and comprehensive. We are inviting students to join in a shared process of finding solutions to envision and advance a stronger, safer, healthier campus and Columbus community that upholds values of equity, justice and respect. We invite your feedback, as well. Please send to sl-vicepresident@osu.edu.

Thank you for being a valuable part of the Ohio State family. Please know your university leaders join you in seeking and finding a better way forward. While aspects of our nation’s history, and certainly recent actions, suggest we may not all be in this together, I believe Ohio State can model and show that together, we can, and will, forge a better tomorrow.
