Your Student Life: Safety Devices

August 13, 2024

As we head into autumn semester, there are things you can do for your safety.

Whether you live on or off-campus, you should consider getting one of our complimentary personal safety alarms for students that, when triggered, emit a loud noise. These devices are easy to carry and can clip onto a belt, backpack or your keys. When activated, the alarm sound is at least 100 decibels and can be heard up to 225 feet away.

These devices are available from Student Life’s Willie J. Young, Sr. Off-Campus and Commuter Student Engagement (OCCSE).

That’s just one of the services offered by OCCSE. We’re Ohio State’s resource center for off-campus living and commuter life. Our office provides several tools for students to find housing, roommates and resources to encourage safe practices in the off-campus area. We encourage you to review all that our office has to offer by checking out our website at offcampus.osu.edu

In addition to the personal safety devices, we also have window and door alarms that emit a loud noise when triggered.

Please keep in mind, the majority of home burglars enter homes through unlocked windows or doors without using force. You can prevent home burglaries before they occur simply by keeping your doors and windows locked at all times. Despite the decline in burglary over the years, on average, renters experience a higher rate of home burglary than homeowners. You can significantly reduce your risk of home burglary by practicing prevention and deterrence.

Each student can reserve a maximum of 5 window and door alarms and 1 personal safety alarm.

Collect your devices today by stopping by our office (3106 Ohio Union) M-F, 8 – 5 p.m.
