Your Student Life: Home for the Holidays, or Not
November 6, 2025
Thanksgiving and winter break can be a joyful time spent with family and friends—but it’s not always easy. Whether you're navigating family dynamics or spending the holiday on campus, here are some helpful strategies to support your well-being:
If Family Gatherings Feel Stressful
Holidays can bring up tension even in loving families. If you find gatherings overwhelming, plan ahead:
- Schedule self-care activities like going for a walk, catching up with friends or visiting your favorite coffee shop.
- Think through how you’ll handle tough moments, whether that means stepping away for a break or staying close to people you feel safe with.
- It’s okay to take space when you need it. Talking with trusted loved ones ahead of time about your concerns can help ease anxiety.
Navigating Food and Body Image Concerns
Holiday meals can be challenging if you’re dealing with eating concerns. Intuitive Eaters’ Holiday Bill of Rights offers empowering suggestions to help you feel more at ease.
If you’d like support, you can schedule a free nutrition coaching session with a Registered Dietitian at the Student Wellness Center. Nutrition services are also available through Student Health Services.
Staying on Campus for Thanksgiving
Not heading home for the holiday? You’re not alone—and there are great ways to enjoy the break:
- Join Ohio State’s annual Thanksgiving Dinner on Nov. 26 at noon in the Archie M. Griffin Ballroom at the Ohio Union. All students, staff and faculty are welcome!
- Explore campus:
- Wander through the Chadwick Arboretum, with over 60 acres of gardens and plant life
- Visit the 11th floor of Thompson Library for stunning views of Columbus
- Take a peaceful walk around Mirror Lake
