Creating the Extraordinary Student Experience

Your Safety. Your Student Life for the week of 1/26/20 (Grad/Prof)

You may have seen recent reports of crimes occurring on or near campus.  Your safety is the university’s top priority. As the people responsible for the Office of Student Life and the Department of Public Safety, we take this responsibility very seriously.

Please know that The Ohio State University Police Division and the Columbus Division of Police work closely to share crime-related information and adjust patrols accordingly. Columbus is a major metropolitan area, and despite the hard work of law enforcement, unfortunately crime can and does occur on occasion on and near campus.

Please make safety a daily priority. Crime is never the fault of the victim, and no one ever “asks” to have a crime committed against them. There is also no single answer to avoid being victimized. Sometimes, even when we make all the right choices, crimes still occur. Our best advice is to help reduce the likelihood by following these safety tips:

·         Always be aware of your surroundings, especially at night.

·         Lock your doors and windows.

·         Keep track of friends, and, if you go out as a group, return home as a group.

·         If you see something, say something and report suspicious behavior by calling OSUPD (614-292-2121) or Columbus Police (614-645-4545) for issues in the off-campus area. And save those numbers into your phone so you have them handy.

. Ohio State provides a number of resources to help you stay safe. Here are a few of them:

  • Ensure you are registered to receive Buckeye Alert emergency notifications.
  • Read the tips for safe habits provided by the Department of Public Safety.
  • Use transportation services such as the Campus Area Bus Service (CABS) or the Lyft Ride Smart at Ohio State program. When using ridesharing services, remember to follow your ride on GPS, verify vehicle information and use responsibly.
  • Download the Rave Guardian app to receive quicker safety notifications and for access to a virtual guardian.
  • Student Life’s Off-Campus and Commuter Student Services provides free window and door alarms and safety timers for students.

Together, we can look out for our fellow Buckeyes to enhance safety for all.
