Dewar Student Life team,

There is no shortage of reasons why a degree from The Ohio State University is so valuable. High on that list is how getting an education here sets up graduates for career success.

With the University-wide Career and Internship Fair getting underway tomorrow, I want to share with you some data that found Buckeye graduates are entering the workforce very well-prepared.

How do we know? Their new bosses tell us so! In fact, 91% of surveyed employers rated Ohio State graduates as well or exceptionally prepared for employment.

What helps students get there?

Employers identified three key experiences that help candidates stand out:

  • Major-related work experiences like internships, co-ops, practicums or apprenticeships

  • Leadership roles in student organizations

  • Service or volunteer involvement

When asked about important skills they are looking for in recent graduates, over 93% of employers selected:

  • Communication - Clearly and effectively exchange information, ideas, facts and perspectives with people inside and outside of an organization

  • Critical thinking - Identify and respond to needs based upon an understanding of situational context and logical analysis of relevant information

  • Professionalism - Understand and demonstrate effective work habits and act in the interest of the larger community and workplace

  • Teamwork - Build and maintain collaborative relationships to work effectively toward common goals, while appreciating varied viewpoints and shared responsibilities

Additionally, more than 70% of employers said Ohio State graduates are proficient in career and self-development, communication, critical thinking and professionalism. These are essential skills across industries.

If you work directly with students, you have a unique opportunity to help them build the experiences and skills that employers value most. If you supervise student employees, I encourage you to remain engaged in the Student Employment Experience program. SEE helps students recognize that the skills they are acquiring in their campus jobs translate directly to what employers are looking for when they hire.

Whether it’s through SEE, encouraging involvement in student organizations, supporting volunteer opportunities or helping students reflect on their strengths and career goals, your guidance plays a critical role in their professional development.

If you know students looking to better prepare for their future career, have them reach out to Buckeye Careers at careerquestions@osu.edu or their college’s career services office.

To explore more findings, visit the Employer Insights at Ohio State website. Questions can be directed to cssl@osu.edu. The Center for the Study of Student Life also offers resources like an infographic and PowerPoint slide to help you share this information with others.

The data are clear: Ohio State students are getting a Scarlet and Great start on their future careers, and I appreciate all you do to support them throughout their time as a Buckeye.
