March 8, 2022

Dear Student life team,

By now you have probably seen the announcement that the university is dropping the mask requirement as of 6 p.m. this Friday, March 11. Masks must still be worn in clinical health care settings, COVID-19 testing locations, childcare centers and on public transportation. Here is more information: https://news.osu.edu/ohio-state-news-alert-masks-now-optional-in-most-university-spaces/.

It is truly testament to your hard work in all aspects of containing the spread of COVID.

However, just because masks will no longer be required, it does not mean that they are forbidden or even a bad idea. You won’t have to wear a mask, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t or can’t.

The presence of the virus is greatly diminished, but COVID is not gone. Neither is the flu nor a myriad of other diseases we’d all like to avoid.

Masks make sense in a number of situations. I’ve talked to plenty of people who say they’ll keep wearing a mask at places like the grocery store or on airplanes out of an abundance of caution. It will just be a part of the next normal.

Masks also make sense if you, or someone you are around, is immunocompromised or has other health issues.

I recognize that masks have become a divisive issue, but “mask shaming” has no place in our society nor on our campuses. You have the right to wear a mask at any time if it makes sense for you, and no one should try to make you feel bad about it.

As the requirement is rescinded at the end of the week, only you can make the determination of what is best for you, and no one should judge you for it. Thanks in advance for doing your part to advance our Scarlet and Great Culture Commitments of Appreciation, Connection, Support and Care.
