Today's Update: Monday, June 3, 2024

June 3, 2024

Dear Student Life team,

It seems like the summer term just started, but we know August will be here in a flash!

Most of you know that the start of the new academic year always means all-hands-on-deck to roll out the Scarlet carpet and support our students as they arrive and get settled.

This “first impression” is crucial to creating the iconic Buckeye experience for our new and returning students, and I write today asking for your assistance.

I know it’s early, but I want to give you time to plan. There are several opportunities for you to become involved. Each is an important component of the launch of autumn semester, and I hope you will offer your time and talent to the extent that you are able (and be sure to check that your supervisor is okay with how you commit your time).

One other note: These functions are crucial, and I want to limit obstacles to team members being able to pitch in. So, as we currently have a “meeting-free Friday” guideline, I’d like to expand that starting on the first day of Move-in (Wednesday, August 14) and run through the end of Welcome Week on Monday, August 19. Unless it’s an urgent topic, I’d rather people be available to help, rather than in meetings.

Here are the opportunities and how you can sign up.

Move-In
Thousands of students will soon be moving into our residence halls, and team members are needed to provide general guidance to students and families about check-in and assist with any other issues or questions. Staff members will not be asked to assist with moving a student’s belongings. Assistance is needed from Wednesday, August 14, through Saturday, August 17, from 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. each day. For more information and to sign up, visit  go.osu.edu/moveinhelp. Please contact Aubrie Smith (smith.4488@osu.edu) with any questions.

Student Involvement Fair
Ohio Union and Student Activities needs help to support the Student Involvement Fair on Sunday, August 18, on the Oval and South Oval. This annual event (which runs 4-7 p.m.) hosts nearly 800 student organizations, campus departments and community partners to help students get involved. Assistance roles are offered throughout the day, are outdoors, most require standing and some require limited lifting and moving tables. For more information and to sign up, visit go.osu.edu/SIFVolunteers2024

Buck-i-Frenzy
On Monday, August 19, from noon – 4 p.m., Buck-i-Frenzy will once again take place in and around the RPAC. We have shifts that run from 7:30 a.m. until clean up after the event. Shifts include traffic control, set-up, vendor move-in, directional guides and more. If you would like to assist with Frenzy, please email buckifrenzy@osu.edu by July 15. If you have had a specific role you love doing, please share that information, too.

Thank you for being willing to help. I know we can create a Scarlet and Great beginning for the 2024-2025 school year, which will be here before we know it.
