Spring Semester 2020 Move Out

March 12, 2020

The Ohio State University is doing everything possible to keep our Buckeye community safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, including a requirement that students move out of residence halls for the remainder of the semester and continue their studies through virtual modes of instruction. The Office of Student Life will be facilitating a scheduled and orderly process for students to move out of the residence halls. To aid this process, we are extending spring break by one week through Sunday, March 22.

An email was sent out on Friday, March 13 with more information about the move out process. Students are required to select a time slot between Saturday, March 14 and Sunday, March 22. This process will aid in our ability to practice appropriate social distancing, limiting the number of people on campus at any one time while allowing you to collect your belongings.

We understand this step is a significant disruption. While there is a great deal of uncertainty during this time, please know that we care deeply about you and are here to support you.

University Housing

  • All undergraduate students living in university housing — whether they remain on campus at this time or are currently traveling for spring break — will be required to return for the remainder of the semester to their permanent home residences, or a non-campus or alternative housing arrangement. This requirement does not pertain to students living in family housing.
  • We recognize and understand that international students may have special circumstances that could make it impossible for them to return to their permanent home. We are working with them to make accommodations on campus.
  • If you are among those students who did not leave campus for spring break and are here at this time, we will support you in your scheduled move-out process with the objective to have this process completed on Sunday, March 22.

Move Out Process

We understand that there will be exceptions and extenuating circumstances. We will work with students who will not be able to return home during this time period on an individual basis. The Office of Student Life is committed to helping you with your personal next steps, and we ask that you carefully follow the steps below to assist us in facilitating this process.

  • Schedule your departure day and time between Saturday, March 14, and Sunday, March 22. This will limit the number of people on campus at any one time while allowing you to collect your belongings. Please access the Check-Out Scheduler: http://go.osu.edu/move_out_scheduler.
  • It is important to adhere to your chosen schedule — and limit the number of people you bring with you — in order to best protect yourself and your fellow Buckeyes. We also ask that your move out be completed within two hours of your scheduled time in order to accommodate your fellow Buckeyes and, again, limit the number of people on campus at one time.
  • We understand that some of you may have specific circumstances which require special attention. Once again, we are committed to working with you to achieve the most satisfactory outcome possible. If you are unable to return to your permanent residence or an alternative housing arrangement by Sunday, March 22 — or if you need a general exception — you can access the Housing Exception Request here: https://housingportal.osu.edu/myhousing

If you did not turn in your room key before leaving campus, you can send the key via registered mail or other shipping companies like FedEx or UPS. Please include a note with your name, student ID#, building and room number. Because normal envelopes tear in transit, keys should be wrapped in 1-2 sheets of paper before being placed in the envelope. Send to:

While there are no confirmed cases at Ohio State at this time, the university is taking these steps out of an abundance of caution. Your health and safety is our top priority. If you have questions or need help with this process, please contact Studentlife@osu.edu.
