Dear Buckeyes,

O-H! Welcome to all of our new Buckeyes, and welcome back to those of you who have been around for a while!

In the weeks leading up to my own first semester as a Buckeye (I can’t believe it’s been nearly five years!), I remember reading and watching everything I could find about my new home. Like many of you, I wanted to be able to hit the ground running, and I figured that the more I knew when I got here, the faster I could become a part of this Buckeye Nation I’d heard so much about.

A couple of weeks ago, I came across a folder full of articles from my “research,” including several about the novelty of the buckeye tree. While I am far from an arborist, I fondly remembered how the articles made me feel an early kinship with this tree that has such a special place in Ohio State tradition.

I learned that buckeye trees are, like you, multi-talented, having been utilized over the years to make things like soap, home remedies, baby cradles, artificial limbs…and, of course, more recently, gameday necklaces.

I learned that buckeye trees make special use of the seasons as they pass. They are distinctively known for their vibrant and early spring flowers, and for being one of the first trees to burst into color in the autumn. I decided this means that buckeye trees simply like to stay ahead of all the others…I’m guessing you know the feeling?

Of course, developing strong roots is a vital part of every tree’s growth. I hope throughout your own Ohio State journey you can feel your Buckeye roots deepening and widening, giving you a firm foundation and just the right nutrients for your extraordinary future.

The last thing I will tell you about buckeye trees is that their famous seeds are said to bring good luck to those who have buckeyes in their lives. I know this to be true because I certainly count myself fortunate to have so many Buckeyes in mine.

One of my favorite sayings is, “Bloom where you’re planted,” and I hope throughout your year you find Ohio State to be fertile ground for you to engage, learn and thrive.

Go Bucks,

Doc
