Today's Update: Wednesday, September 9

Dear Student Life Team, We are in a difficult period right now. We’ve all worked very hard to enable us to remain on campus in a safe and healthy way, and, at the same time, we know COVID-19 is still out there. Many of us are physically and mentally tired.   

More than ever, we need to keep kindness at the forefront. It’s been intense since March, and that can lead to frayed nerves and less consideration for others.  

“Peer pressure” is often cast in negative terms, but there is another side to it. Peer pressure can result in positive and caring actions as well. When people see others being kind, it encourages them to do the same. 

Kindness also is a component in resilience. Experts say not treating each other with kindness can hurt our ability to cope. The bottom line: kindness boosts resilience. 

I would encourage you to check out the Student Life Kindness website:  I mentioned it Friday in my update as a place to send kudos to colleagues. There are a number of templates you can use, from “Thank you” to “I appreciate you” to “Hey Rockstar!”  

It’s a little thing that doesn’t take much time, but kindness is seldom about huge effort. It is those little things that make a difference and show others you care.
