Today's Update: Wednesday, August 12

August 12, 2020

Dear Student Life Team, Welcome to another Wellness Wednesday – this week, the focus is intellectual well-being.

According to the Student Life Student Wellness Center:
“The intellectually well person values lifelong learning and seeks to foster critical thinking, develop moral reasoning, expand worldviews and engage in education for the pursuit of knowledge.”

Working at Ohio State in higher education, intellectual well-being is all around us. It’s what we do as a university, and what we support our students in doing. But how well are you taking part?

I think it’s wonderful that a number of our team members teach classes. Even more are taking classes and working toward advanced degrees. There are also plenty of professional development opportunities on campus. All these things fuel our thirst for knowledge.

In student affairs, we often point out that learning doesn’t take place just in the classroom. It’s true for our students, and it’s true for us as team members. I always want to be curious. What is that? Why does it do that? How can we do it better? When we stop asking questions, when we stop wondering, we lose our intellectual well-being.

I’m looking forward to exploring more corners of campus. As things re-open, places like the Wexner Center for the Arts, the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and the museum in Orton Hall offer intellectual stimulation in fun environments.

My favorite intellectual pursuit is reading. I love to read, and read absolutely everything. Whenever I go on vacation I take a stack of books and complete all of them. I am always looking for my next book. Whether you use an e-reader or love the feel of paper pages, whether you read beach novels or historical tomes, there is nothing like escaping into a good book.

Even with libraries not fully open, anyone with a library card can use the Libby app to check out or reserve audio or electronic books.

However and whatever you choose to read, I appreciate that you are reading this right now. You are Scarlet and Great.
