Today's Update: Wednesday, April 1
April 1, 2020
Dear Student Life Team:
Sometimes it’s about the little things. Yesterday I received a note from one of you who noticed I didn’t sign my last two updates with “Scarlet and Great.” There was really nothing behind that, it just happened that I closed differently, and frankly, I didn’t want to wear it out. But what it made me realize is: the little things really matter, especially in a time like this. Having those types of things to count on, no matter how small, can make a difference in a day.
So I ask all of you, what are the little things you are holding dear right now? I think sometimes when you “name it” you come to value and appreciate it even more. It might be something like a funny blog or podcast that’s been making you laugh. It could be your four-legged family member greeting you in the morning or pestering you for treats during the day. It might be that brief daily phone call (or FaceTime) with a loved one far away, just to make sure they’re doing okay.
We are all dealing with the COVID-19 disruption in our lives. Some of the “little things” we counted on just a short time ago may not be possible today. An evening out with friends or a trip to a coffee shop just can’t be part of our plans right now. For me, I shared in several of the Listening Sessions that for years I’ve set aside time for myself on Sunday afternoons to go see a movie. It centers me, refreshes me and makes me happy. And for now, it’s unavailable – in the same way – so #movieswithmelissa is now watching a film from my comfy sofa! Sometimes you have to create your own new “little thing” in life, even if it’s temporary.
Whatever your “little thing” is, I encourage you to find it and embrace it---today and for all the rest of the days.
You’ve earned it. You really are Scarlet and Great!
