October 31, 2023

Dear Student Life team,

This semester has been particularly challenging for so many in our campus community, and it can oftentimes feel difficult to know how to refer students for assistance. That said, I wanted to share the message below that I sent to all students this morning in the event it is helpful to you, as well.

These are troubling times. From the wars in the Middle East and Europe, to natural disasters across the globe and violence leading to loss of life here in the U.S., I understand that many students, faculty and staff are struggling emotionally, and feeling anxiety, stress and even anger and fear. As you navigate the world around you and afar, below are some things to keep in mind and resources that may help.

Incidents of Threats or Harassment

Your safety continues to be a top Ohio State priority. If at any time you feel unsafe, or if you receive a threat to your personal safety, I urge you to report it to the Ohio State University Police Division by calling 9-1-1 in an emergency or 614-292-2121 for non-emergencies. Please know that the university continues to adjust our safety enhancements, as needed.

It is also more important than ever that Buckeyes treat each other with dignity and show respect to the diversity of thought and backgrounds that exist at Ohio State. Threats and harassment are never acceptable. If you are aware of this type of incident involving a campus community member, it is critically important to report it to The Office of Institutional Equity (OIE). Reporting not only allows the university to provide you with support, but also allows us to respond to these incidents, to identify patterns, and to continue to enhance safety and security for our community.

Well-being Resources
Your well-being is extremely important, and it’s okay to share with others when you really aren’t okay. Students can access support and resources provided by the Student Wellness Center, Student Advocacy Center and the Center for Belonging and Social Change. The university’s Office of Student Life offers on-demand services through the Counseling and Consultation Service that are available 24/7, and the Wexner Medical Center’s Stress, Trauma And Resilience (STAR) program is also available to you. Student Legal Services is also available to those who are eligible to take part.

Staying Healthy
Sometimes during times of stress, it is common to pay less attention to your physical health, so I want to offer a friendly reminder. Flu season is upon us and a new COVID-19 vaccine is available. You can get shots for both through Student Health Services. You can schedule an appointment via My BuckMD by searching “Vaccine Pharmacy Appointment” under appointment type. In addition, walk in flu vaccines are available on a limited basis. Call the SHS Pharmacy at 614-292-0125 to verify availability. Third party medical insurance plans can be registered and billed for this appointment, and coverage will ultimately depend on your specific plan. Most insurance plans, including the Student Health Insurance Plan, typically fully cover routine vaccinations.

You Matter
With everything going on in the world, we can sometimes feel alone, even when we are sitting right next to another person. If you are feeling like that today, please know that we are here for you and that you matter as a very important part of our Buckeye community. Please let me know if there is anything we can do to support you.

Thank you for all you do helping our students engage, learn and thrive.
