Today's Update: Thursday, April 29

Dear Student Life Team, We keep talking about the “next normal” for our work (and life) as we move forward through the pandemic. Obviously, things are not going to be exactly the way they were before COVID hit, and we must evaluate what elements we do or do not retain.  

Those areas include not just how we work, but where. Many have been working remotely since the pandemic began, which has proven effective in de-populating the campus to reduce the chances for spread of the virus.  

Some have thrived working from home. Others have found it more challenging. Some can’t wait to get back to campus. Others would be perfectly happy never returning to their on-campus work spaces. 

Now, as we edge toward a greater presence on campus this fall for both students and staff, we need to develop a strategy best suited for our Student Life business and operational needs. 

We have a diverse workforce, some with direct student facing responsibilities and others who can do their work from a different location. At the same time, I don’t want to dismiss the impact being in a workplace together can have on team building, efficiency and effectiveness. 

For these reasons, I have asked our Human Resources Business Partner Shina Hayden and Associate Vice President for Administration and Finance Dave Wiseley to head a “tiger team,” a specialized, cross-functional team brought together to address this critical issue and provide recommendations. They will pull together representatives from a number of functional areas. 

I have asked them to report back so that we can announce a return-to-work philosophy in early to mid-June.  

This is an important time for our team, and I am pleased Dave and Shina have agreed to tackle it as we plot our course to a Scarlet and Great next normal.
