Dear Student Life Team, Happy New Year!
I think all of us are happy to put 2020 behind us. It was a difficult, exhausting, challenging, frustrating year. In the words of a song I heard a few too many times over the past few weeks, 2020 “stink, stank, stunk!” I would probably have chosen the seasick crocodile, too.
As Grinchy as last year was, think of all we accomplished, and all we overcame. The pandemic turned our world upside down, yet we met the challenges with flexibility, resilience and innovative thinking. There was no guidebook for operating an institution of higher learning under these conditions, so we managed to write our own. It wasn’t easy, but we did a Scarlet and Great job of it.
We learned a great many lessons from our experiences in 2020. We learned what worked, we learned what didn’t, and we continually got smarter as we made our way through these uncharted waters. We know far more than when this started, and we are far better prepared for whatever comes our way next.
That’s what makes me optimistic about 2021. We’ve learned what we need to do, and have increasingly found the best way to do it. And with a vaccine being rolled out, our future is bright.
Spring semester won’t be easy. There will still be challenges and obstacles to overcome, and logistics to sort out. But we are starting the new year in a far better place than we started last semester.
Besides, Ohio State is playing for the National Championship next week. 2021 is already better than 2020.
We got this! Thanks to you, 2021 can be a Scarlet and Great year.
