Today's Update: Monday, April 6

April 6, 2020

Dear Student Life Team:

I hope everyone was able to enjoy some of the lovely weather this weekend. I am happy to report that #MoviesWithMelissa continued this Sunday! And it was a trifecta: I watched Parasite, Sunrise in Heaven and Always a Bridesmaid.

To start the week, I thought it would be a good idea today to remind everyone that President Drake sent a message on Friday with many updates. If you haven’t had a chance to read it yet, I encourage you to take a few minutes to do so. You can find it online.

This morning, I had a wonderful conversation with our outgoing and incoming Undergraduate Student Government teams. It was a great opportunity to check in with the students and ask for their input and feedback about how things are going with their constituents. We talked a great deal about the virtual commencement celebration and the future commencement event. And they shared about students’ thoughts, fears, disappointments and resilience. I also want you to know that they were very concerned about how our Student Life team members are doing during this disruption. They very much understand how important student interaction is to us and wanted us to know they are thinking of us.

Friday, I was also able to join our Council of Graduate Students for their weekly meeting and we had similar conversations. They are working hard to help their students acquire support and resources and plan for a summer that will look much different than they anticipated. They have concerns about students maintaining access to mental health resources, support for international students and continued employment of GAAs and GTAs who are also lecturers. I was able to share about many of the virtual resources our Counseling and Consultation Service have made available, so thanks to that team for their efforts. I should also remind you that this week is National Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week, so please take time to acknowledge the amazing students you know and work with.

The students all recommended that I reach out to our graduating students with a message of support and encouragement, and of course I have agreed to do so. I want to make sure they know that no matter where they are, where they plan to go or how unsure they may feel right not that Ohio State is here for them today and in the future. I will share a copy of this message with you after it goes out.

If you have any need to go back to past updates from me, they are now posted online:

Thanks again for all you do. I truly hope you got some rejuvenation this weekend. Here’s to another Scarlet and Great week!
