Today's Update: Monday, April 5

April 5, 2021

Dear Student Life Team, This is Graduate Student Appreciation Week.

It was started in 1993 by the National Association of Graduate-Professional Students as a way to honor their contributions and impact on college campuses. I am proud to add my voice to those saluting these extraordinary students.

I want to especially express my gratitude to our Student Life Graduate Administrative Associates (GAAs). We have 50 of them in our unit, and it’s no exaggeration to say they are each integral to our operation, and their experience is a blend of theory and practice.

Our GAAs combine the exceptional lessons they learn in the classroom with the crucial skills they obtain working in a real-world environment, setting them, and us, up for success for years to come. GAAs work toward getting their degree while working on the front lines of student affairs.

Their work is largely student facing. Many serve on important committees across Student Life and are critical to some of the programs and services we offer. GAAs are a great asset to our unit, and I am grateful that they are mentored along the way by our team members.

Most of our GAAs work in Residence Life, although they are part of a number of other departments, as well. Many, although again not all, of the GAAs in Student Life are part of the Higher Education Student Affairs (HESA) program in the College of Education and Human Ecology. I am very proud of our relationship with HESA. It is a partnership that dates back more than 70 years, and together we are developing the next generation of leaders in our profession.

Want to express your own appreciation to a graduate student you know? Go to to send kudos.

We learn from our GAAs as much as they learn from us. I am proud of them, and Scarlet and Grateful for the many ways they contribute to the extraordinary student experience at Ohio State.
