Today's Update: Friday, October 9
October 9, 2020
Dear Student Life Team, The weather has been beautiful this week, the vast majority of our students are staying safe and healthy and our team continues to do Scarlet and Great work. It all makes me very grateful.
I’m also grateful to be able to do High Fives every week. Our team is amazing, and this is one small way I can tell you how much I appreciate the efforts everyone in Student Life is making.
A High Five goes to BuckeyeThon and the Student Philanthropy team (and many others!) who support them. As you read in Slice this morning, they raised $232,491.89 during their Day of Miracles 24-hour fundraising campaign on Wednesday. Their goal is to raise $2 million by the end of the virtual Dance Marathon, which will be held on Saturday, November 21.
High Five to celebrating LGBTQ History Month with its focus on developing a sense of belonging and empowerment for the LGBTQ community. The Student Life Multicultural Center is leading the way with programming, visibility campaigns and educational events. You can see what’s happening on the MCC’s online calendar: mcc.osu.edu/events-and-programs/heritage-and-awareness-months/lgbtq-history-month.
A High Five goes to Buckeye Careers’ Carly Zeiger, who had to quickly pivot and plan the first university-wide virtual career fair this fall due to the pandemic. Carly gets a special High Five mention for having to learn a new virtual career fair tool while it was still being built in Handshake. The fair was a great success.
The Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars through Rec Sports get a High Five for working with the Wexner Medical Center to create handmade thank you cards for frontline medical workers. They were able to deliver 349 cards!
High Fives to everyone who helped arrange for OSU Votes to again be able to bus students to Franklin County’s early voting site later this month.
I keep getting great feedback from students and parents about the check-in calls, email responses and phone bank call center. High Fives to everyone involved for providing this often difficult, but much appreciated, support.
Sorority and Fraternity Life nominated members of the Case Investigation and Contact Tracing Team, specifically Dr. Mikkel Quam and Dr. Thomas Knobloch, for High Fives. They especially wanted to thank Dr. Knobloch for the countless hours he spent on evening Zoom calls helping SFL leaders.
You can suggest High Five recipients, too. Just let me know...I love to hear about, and share, stories of our team doing Scarlet and Great work!
