Today's Update: Friday, May 1

May 1, 2020

Dear Student Life Team,

I have a lot of high fives to hand out (virtually) on this High Five every member of the Class of 2020.

They are on the verge of joining a large, but very select group: a graduate of The Ohio State University. They have overcome challenges, obstacles and roadblocks, but have persevered and made it. And I am so proud of them.

Commencement is always a day to remember, and this year is no exception. It will be memorable not only for the amazing graduates who are receiving degrees, but also for the unusual circumstances we find ourselves in.

The ceremony will be conducted virtually, with a live stream available on WOSU and online at

I wish we could have all been together. I’m sure many of you wish you could be in the ‘Shoe helping with grads and their families. This isn’t how any of us expected the semester to turn out, but nothing, especially not a virus, can take away from the accomplishments of the Class of 2020. No one should ever let COVID-19 overshadow the experiences, the friendships and the successes of students here at Ohio State.

Our grads are on a journey, and sometimes journeys take an unexpected twist or detour. But, to those standing on the edge of their future, no matter what lies ahead, I know they are poised for great things. Buckeye Spirit is vibrant and alive on all corners of the globe. Let’s join in celebrating that spirit, and the success of our graduates.

High fives to our grads, they are truly Scarlet and Great!
