Today's Update: Friday, March 27

March 27, 2020

Dear Student Life Team:

I know it’s sometimes hard to remember exactly what day it is in our new reality, but it’s Friday! And though that doesn’t exactly hold the same celebratory tone as it might have a month or so ago, I remind us that we are another week closer to the bright side of what I know has been a tough time.

As we close the week, there is some news to share with you. First, the university will refund prorated housing, dining and/or recreation fees to students. The credited amounts will be based on the period from Monday, March 16, to the end of the semester. Refunds will be processed on Friday, April 3. Students and staff/faculty/affiliate members of Rec Sports are getting messages outlining next steps.

Second, based on the latest guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control, state and local health departments and the Wexner Medical Center, our facilities including recreation centers, the Younkin Success Center and the Ohio Union will remain closed until further notice. I know this closure extension is probably not a shock to you, but I want to honor the disappointment of our staff members whose profession is built on facilitating spaces where students can come together, build community, engage in dialog, explore new ideas and advance their health and well-being. Please continue to remember: We are in this together.

These updates, among others, are in an email sent by President Drake today. None of these developments are surprising, given the circumstances, but they highlight the seriousness of this pandemic and the importance of our continued diligent response. No matter where you are, on campus or in your daily lives, please remember to practice social distancing and take every precaution you can to keep yourself, and your colleagues and loved ones, safe.

As I said, we’ve made it through another week in this strange new world. As we work our way through challenges without precedent, I want to pause to reflect on what an amazing job you’ve done. They say you never know what you can do until you try, and you have proven that the Student Life team can do just about anything. I am so proud of every single one of you, and extremely grateful for all you have done and continue to do. You are all superheroes. Our university, our students, our community and our colleagues have all benefited from your superpowers.

I am grateful for your efforts, flexibility and dedication. Have a restful, quiet and well weekend.

Melissa
