April 28, 2023

Dear Student Life team,

Happy High Five Friday.

We buried a time capsule recently at the NPHC Plaza, full of photos and mementos of the creation of this significant and historic project. It will be opened in April 2073. High Fives to everyone involved, including Tracy Stuck, who coordinated the project, and Jeremy Gabis, Hunter Hartwig, Kim Monteaux De Freitas, Eddie Labid, Tanisha Jenkins, Charity Martin-King, Kailee Missler, Christy Muhoberac, Kellie Uhrig, Candyce Williams, Dave Isaacs, Joel Sedziol, Adrienne Gladish, Jen Cottrell and J Randall Hicks, who also produced a great video about it.

Student Life Graduate Teaching Associate for OSU Votes Sam Evans gets a High Five for being one of 175 students nationwide selected to the 2023 ALL IN Student Voting Honor Roll. The distinction goes to college students doing outstanding work to advance nonpartisan democratic engagement at participating campuses.

High Five to Austin Borreson and the Buckeye Careers team for hosting a wonderful end of the year celebration for our Student Life Graduate Teaching and Research Associates.

Buckeye Career’s Jennifer Chilman gets a High Five for organizing five engaging employer panels for the 2023 Spring Advising Conference and providing an overview of Buckeye Careers. Jennifer engaged seven employer organizations, recruited four career services colleagues to moderate and compiled a list of moderator questions. Also, High Fives to Jennifer, Mollie Workman, Taylor Koon, Nancy Thompson and Scott Kustis from Arts and Sciences Career Success for moderating the employer panels.

High Five to Adam Cutright for continuing to look out for the safety and well-being of our student residents.

I have some High Fives for our team at Ohio State-Mansfield, including Michelle McGregor for being recognized as College of Social Work Field Education Staff Member of the Year. In addition to her role in Student Life, she has helped support students in their field experiences. Jennifer Fry, Kendra Boggs, Michelle McGregor, Tiffany Mitchell and Sydney Gilmore get High Fives for covering for Student Life/Assistant Dean Donna Hight while she was out of the office for a time. And High Fives to Suzanna Roemer and Andrea Wittmer in Bromfield Library and Information Commons for being partners in doing health and wellness programming for our Mansfield students.

Now, on to Ohio State-Lima, where Rachel Richardson gets a High Five for her work in coordinating the Social Service Career Fair. Rachel worked to get many of the organizations, the profile images with marketing and the presenters from a local bank.

High Five to Service2Facilities Supervisor Stephanie Boron for being nominated as an Outstanding SEE (Student Employment Experience) Supervisor by her team.

Every year, the Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA) faculty gives out several awards, one of which is the Friend of SPA/HESA Award. This award recognizes someone who has consistently and strongly supported the HESA Program. This year the award goes to Anne McDaniel for being “especially helpful as we have navigated assistantship changes this year and open to feedback. In essence, she is consistently supportive of the Program and HESA students, and we are immensely grateful for her.” I’m grateful for her too, and High Five, Anne!

High Five to Erica Szeyller in the Center for the Study of Student Life for analyzing and reporting on our students’ post-graduation outcomes to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). Sorting through all of this data is no small task but an important way that Ohio State can share our students’ successes.

Finally, I love hearing feedback about our support for students. One parent called to say the university has done an “excellent job” in supporting her student who was recently hospitalized. She specifically wanted to share her appreciation and thanks for the Student Advocacy staff. She said they were responsive and supportive which made her feel better about how to help her student as he finishes the semester and manages treatment options. High Five, Student Advocacy!

Have a Scarlet and Great weekend.
