Creating the Extraordinary Student Experience

Tackling Hunger. Your Student Life for the week of 11/17/19 (Undergrad)

Food security has increasingly become an issue discussed on college and university campuses. Research shows it can be a barrier to student success, affecting academics, wellness and behavior (Cady, 2014). Research at Ohio State, conducted in 2014 by the Center for the Study of Student Life, found that 15.2% of undergraduate students have very low food security. This information prompted a group of students to create the Buckeye Food Alliance (BFA).

While Ohio State does its part to ensure that students who live in residence halls have a meal plan, the creators of BFA acknowledged that some of their peers lacked reliable access to food. In 2016, the Office of Student Life donated space and covers operating costs in Lincoln Tower for the university’s first on-campus food pantry.

This is a food pantry run by students for students. Located in 150 Lincoln Tower, the mission of BFA is to provide access to healthy food to the Ohio State student community in order to reduce food insecurity.  During the 2018-2019 academic year, BFA served 411 families and had a total of 901 individual visits. The food comes from a number of sources. Students can donate unused visit exchanges to buy food items through the GrubHub app in partnership with Student Life Dining Services. You’ll also see periodic food drives on campus. We also partner with the Mid-Ohio Food Bank to purchase large quantities of food at a greatly subsidized rate to ensure that the pantry is stocked.

Today, BFA is ready to take the next step in its growth to accommodate the growing use of its services. BFA will be opening a second location at St. Stephens Episcopal Church (30 W. Woodruff Ave.). An open house is scheduled for January 13 from 4-8 p.m. The goal of this new pantry is to expand access to nutritious food to students living in the off-campus area.

In addition to the exciting addition of a second food pantry location, BFA is excited to announce a new initiative that starts today. From midnight on Sunday, November 17, through 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, November 23, the Tackle Hunger Penn State vs. Ohio State Giving Challenge will raise money for each school’s respective campus food pantries. The winner will be the school that captures the greatest number of $5 gifts, and supporters can choose to make multiple contributions.

Help us support your fellow students, beat Penn State and Tackle Hunger by donating online or at one of the Tackle Hunger kiosks around campus.
