In A Nutshell: June 25, 2021
June 25, 2021
Dear Partners in Student Success:
I hope your summer is going well! Our work continues in Student Life as we plan for a safe, healthy and reactivated fall semester. Below are some updates and information I hope you find helpful:
SilverCloud Health Available for Students
Student Life’s Counseling and Consultation Service (CCS) has introduced SilverCloud, an online, self-guided, interactive mental health resource that provides students with accessible cognitive behavioral interventions 24 hours a day, wherever they are. SilverCloud’s programs help students employ strategies to manage stress and anxiety, strengthen natural resilience and better understand how thoughts, feelings and behaviors work together. Learn more on the CCS website.
Off-Campus and Commuter Student Support
The Willie J. Young, Sr. Off-Campus and Commuter Student Engagement (OCCSE) department has many offerings over the summer to help students living in the Columbus area get ready for autumn semester. Throughout July, OCCSE will be hosting Virtual Roommate Fairs as well as orientation sessions for students and their families. For more information on the support and resources available for our off-campus and commuter students, visit the OCCSE website.
Summer in Motion Fitness Program
Rec Sports is offering a Summer in Motion fitness program to keep students living life in motion all summer long! Students can sign up to receive a bi-weekly newsletter packed with exclusive access to brand new group fitness class recordings and challenges, written workouts, tips and more. More information is available on the Rec Sports website.
Save the Date: 2021 Ohio State Career Week
The Office of Student Life is excited to announce the inaugural Career Week taking place September 20-24, 2021. Career Week will consist of workshops, networking opportunities and other sessions surrounding career development, in addition to a virtual Fall Career and Internship Fair on Wednesday, September 22, hosted on Handshake. If your area is interested in submitting a program for Career Week, please fill out this survey no later than July 23, 2021. More information is available on the Buckeye Careers website.
Voluntary COVID-19 Vaccination Status Sharing
While the COVID-19 vaccine is not part of the University Vaccination Requirement, students are encouraged to receive the vaccine and voluntarily share their vaccine status with the university to assist with our autumn planning and overall public health response, including changes to testing frequency as well as quarantine and isolation protocol. Students can submit their vaccination information by using the My BuckMD portal to complete the vaccine consent form as well as upload any necessary documentation.
Faculty and staff are also encouraged to receive the vaccine and voluntarily share their information by filling out this simple online form. More information about the vaccination effort can be found on the Safe and Healthy Buckeyes website.
Rec Sports Facilities Updates
As health and safety measures change, Student Life Rec Sports is updating their operations accordingly. Updates to Rec Sports facilities include:
- For fully vaccinated people, masks are no longer required in the recreation centers.
- RPAC locker room showers are now available for member use.
- Outdoor basketball hoops at Lincoln Tower Park (northwest corner of the RPAC) will be open for play, including five vs. five. Sand volleyball courts outside of the RPAC will have nets up at all times. North Beach sand volleyball court (located outside Curl Hall along Woodruff) nets will be up at all times. Equipment rentals will be available at the Women’s Field House for outdoor equipment.
- Family hours have returned to Rec Sports this summer with family swimming and indoor climbing.
As Rec Sports returns to traditional operations, please visit the COVID-19 page on their website for updates and information.
Student Life Strategic Planning
The Office of Student Life will be embarking on a strategic planning process this summer and is looking for your input. The Student Life Strategic Planning Team is offering ways for students, faculty, staff and campus and community partners to share their ideas and feedback. A short, anonymous survey is open until July 15 to share initial thoughts and ideas. There will also be listening sessions throughout July for further conversations. More information is available on the Student Life website.
Student Life Disability Services part of FRAME
Student Life Disability Services (SLDS) is now a part of FRAME, Federated Repositories of Accessible Material for Higher Education, a project that creates a web-based infrastructure allowing schools to create a common repository of materials for students with print disabilities. Because many of the same materials are used at multiple institutions, FRAME eliminates wasteful duplication. Ohio State is one of eight institutions involved in the effort. Read more on the University of Virginia website.
As always, thank you for your partnership and support of our students.
