Effectively Supervising First Generation Professionals

As first-generation college students (those who are first in their families to complete a 4-year degree) enter the workforce and traverse through their careers, their work supervisors are solidly positioned to positively influence their experiences. On November 8, which is also National First Generation College Celebration Day Angie Wellman will share the findings of her 2022 dissertation.

The purpose of this exploratory study was to learn, directly from first-generation professionals working in higher education, what they believe they need from their supervisors to support their well-being and success. This Belonging and Education virtual “lunch and learn” will be held via Zoom from noon to 1 p.m. and will include an open discussion on first-gen professional strengths and areas for growth in Student Life. Active Listening Toward Building Empathy and Connection

In our fast-paced work, it is sometimes difficult to remember to slow down and choose to really be present with our co-workers and students. On November 14, we will spend some time revisiting active listening skills, give consideration to the characteristics of effective working relationships, and applying these tools toward building empathy and creating meaningful connections with one another. Join Belonging and Education at 9:30-10:45 a.m. in the Barbie Tootle room on the 3rd floor of the Ohio Union for this highly engaging workshop.

Our facilitator will be Kristin Torres-Pierce, who has 22 years of experience as a social worker and a community educator. Kristin is a subject matter expert in the areas of bias, sexual health, and trauma informed care. She has an additional certification in Trauma Responsive Care from the Tri-State Trauma Network. Kristin identifies as Queer woman who grew up in Appalachia and has a rich Puerto Rican heritage. Her intersecting identities give her a unique lens through which to see and interpret the world.

Roundtable Discussion: Trauma Informed Practices, Resources & Supports

As professionals working Student Life, whether by organizational role or through student advocacy and mentorship, we often find ourselves supporting students through traumatic experiences and difficult life situations. As noted in a recent article in the Leadership Exchange, who you are and how you identify impacts the trauma you experience and are exposed to along with how you respond and are expected to respond.

In this Belonging and Education roundtable dialogue set for November 20, from noon to 1 p.m., we will discuss our experiences in working with students, managing secondary trauma, and negotiating our own “stuff” with an aim toward brainstorming possible resources that Student Life could offer in supporting effective practices and our collective wellbeing. All are welcome to participate.
