Time: Monday, November 18, 2013 6:00 PM - 7:45 PM
Location: Multicultural Center
As part of the Student Life Multicultural Center's Native American Heritage Month, the film Two Spirits will be screened. This is a collaboration between the American Indian Council, Shades & Queers & Allies.
Filmmaker Lydia Nibley explores the cultural context behind a tragic and senseless murder. Fred Martinez was a Navajo youth slain at the age of 16. But Fred was part of an honored Navajo tradition - the nadleeh, or 'two-spirit,' who possesses a balance of masculine and feminine traits. In relating Fred's story, Nibley reminds us of the values that America's indigenous peoples have long embraced.
This will be an exciting and provocative look at the intersection of American Indian/Indigenous cultures and LGBTQ cultures. We hope that you will join us for the screening and dialogue to follow.
