Dr. J's Message for May 10-17, 2009

It's hard to believe, but we're just a month away from the end of the academic year.  In between the end-of-the-quarter papers, tests and projects and spring-time activities, you have to find time to take care of end-of-the-year business.  It helps to plan ahead, so here are a few things to think about.

What do you do with the stuff you can't take home?  The perfect answer is Dump and Run,  the annual project by Students for Recycling, in which you can donate unwanted furniture, small appliances, clothing, housewares, and unopened non-perishable food items.  The food is donated to the Mid-Ohio Food Bank, and the other items are stored over the summer and sold at a giant yard sale in the fall, with proceeds going to the student organizations that work on the project as well as local charities.  It's a win-win-win, because it reduces waste, contributes to the community, and provides low-cost household items to next year's students.

Making the transition from college to workplace.  Especially designed for spring graduates, "From Classmates to Colleagues: Life After College" is a one-day program on Wednesday, May 20, that will provide a variety of perspectives and information on finding a job and making the change to a workplace culture.  Resume critiques, panel discussions with employers and alumni, and a keynote address on "Transitioning inot the Changing Economy" are all on the agenda.

Ending your lease.  Now's the time to talk with housemates about move-out.  Who's leaving when?  Who's responsible for cleaning, repairing or replacing broken items, turning in the keys and collecting the security deposit, and making sure final utility bills are paid?  The Student Housing Legal Clinic has some good information and checklists (look under Move In-Move Out and Security Deposits).  Note that you cannot skip the last month's rent and allow the security deposit to take care of it-that's not legal.

I hope you enjoy the rest of the year, and I can just about guarantee that if you start working on some of these things now, you'll find the last week to be less stressful.
