Dr. J's message for April 19-26, 2009

You've probably heard the phrase "April is the cruelest month" and you may recognize it as the first line of T.S. Eliot's poem The Waste Land.  But, it seems to me that when most people quote it, they are just commenting about the way April weather plays mean tricks.  One day, it's warm, sunny, blue skies, and gentle breezes.  The next, it's cold, gray, damp and drizzly.

Today is one of the beautiful spring days.  Since I arrived here in January, I haven't spent a lot of time outdoors or seen the campus with green grass, flowering trees and blooming tulips.  It's lovely, and I'm happy to see so many students enjoying outdoor activities.  The recreation facilities seem to be busy with intramurals and impromptu games; there are students studying outdoors; people out walking, running, biking and blading; and just an air of increased energy and activity all around.

In addition to the outdoor recreation, the calendar http://www.studentlife.osu.edu/calendar/ for the next few weeks is full of special events and celebrations, such as Hispanic Awareness Week, Disability Awareness Month, African American Heritage Festival, Earth Day, Rock the Block, honor society inductions, college awards ceremonies, May Week, Greek Week, and many more.  I'll be visiting these and many other events, and I hope to meet many of you there as well as out and about. .  We can talk about anything-or the weather!
