Dr. J's message for April 11-18, 2009
Undergraduate Student Government elections are coming up this Thursday and Friday. If this year is like recent ones, quite a few of you are not planning to vote, and I think that's a real shame.
Let's see if I can persuade you that you should vote.
USG represents YOU!
USG is a voice of undergraduate students at Ohio State. I don't think many students who are not involved in student government realize just how big a role student government plays in advocating for and promoting student issues to the university administration, in university governance, and in city and state government. USG represents some 47,750 students at all Ohio State campuses, and that's powerful.
Your vote counts
There are differences among the candidates, and the elections are often quite close. Help make sure that your interests and concerns are represented, and that those elected will promote the projects you think are most important.
USG accomplishes important things.
USG gets involved in a lot of issues, sometimes in an active manner and sometimes in an advisory capacity. In recent years, USG has successfully lobbied Columbus City Council to install more street lighting the University District and to strengthen the law against aggressive panhandling. USG has funded the purchase of a police cruiser for joint OSU and Columbus police patrols, hosted an annual safety summit, and is piloting a proposal to expand legal services to students. By voting, you will have a say in which projects are promoted next year.
You do have time.
Voting is held online and takes only a couple of minutes. You can read about the candidates and their platforms here. http://usg.osu.edu/elections_usg/
I hope you'll vote. Make sure your views are represented!
