Join the Office of Student Life in celebrating the legacy of Anne and Woody Hayes this February, which marks 100 years since Woody’s birth on February 14, 1913.  Anne & Woody Hayes Celebration Week will feature events and activities honoring one of Ohio State’s most-loved couples.  From their everyday life to gridiron triumphs, the week will focus on the stories, traditions, and contributions of two people whose influence on Buckeye Nation remains strong to this day.

The Office of Student Life’s events are part of a university-wide celebration of Anne and Woody Hayes. The main university will hold a celebration dinner on February 15, 2013. Other offices, including University Archives and Thompson Library, will also hold events.

Flag Football Tournament

10 a.m.

Lincoln Tower Park Turf Fields

At the Flag Football Championship, students will get the chance to play flag football in the shadow of the Ohio Stadium, where Woody coached many legendary games. Ohio State was not the only team to call Woody 'coach,' he also coached at Denison and Miami University. On Sunday, February 10 students from all three schools are invited to play in a flag football championship. All participants will get to play at least two games and will receive a t-shirt. Speak Like Anne Hayes, part of OUAB’s Professional Development Series

Anne Hayes was known for her public speaking talents. Students of all majors, from sociology to mathematics, can benefit from having strong speaking skills. As part of their Professional Development Series, OUAB will host a workshop inspired by Anne on Monday, February 11 in the Great Hall Meeting Room one, Ohio Union. Resilience Speaker

Woody once said, "nobody could win football games unless they regarded the game positively and would agree to pay the price that success demands of a team." With this coaching philosophy, Woody inspired his team to be resilient and win games. Students have the opportunity to learn about resilience Monday, February 11 as journalist Alina Tugend, author of Better By Mistakes, shares her stories of resilience in the RPAC Meeting Rooms from 5 - 6 p.m. Refreshments will be available and attendees will be eligible to win gift cards for smoothies at Juice2.  All are welcome to attend.

Anne Hayes was known for her great cooking and hospitality. On Sundays after a big game, she would prepare big meals for the players and neighborhood kids. On Monday, February 11, OUABe in the Kitchen will host Cook Like Anne Hayes in the Ohio Union’s Instructional Kitchen. Students will learn how to cook Anne’s favorite dishes, perfect for a family night or hosting friends.  RSVP to ouab.grad.prof@gmail.com.

Anne Hayes was very passionate about service, social work, and the Buckeye Ranch.  The Buckeye Ranch is a private, nonprofit provider that has been serving children and families in the Franklin County area and beyond for over 50 years.  They offer a variety of programs and services for children ages 6-17.5 and their families to assist them in dealing with mental health, emotional, behavioral, and substance use issues. In order to pay it forward, a group of students majoring on social work will join together to do service in honor of Woody and Anne Hayes at the Buckeye Ranch, Rosemont Center.  To RSVP, or for more details, email poth.20@osu.edu or call (614) 247-8049. Drills with Woody

Have you ever thought about how your fitness level measures up to an elite Ohio State athlete? Come to Drills with Woody to test your fitness. The event will be held in Honor of Woody Hayes' 100th Birthday in the North Gym on the ground floor of the RPAC. Participants will get a unique opportunity to train like an Ohio State Buckeye and experience an intense boot camp with two of Ohio State's finest strength and condition coaches, Coach Glass and Coach Tipple. The first 40 students will receive a T-shirt and fun giveaways for participation. No RSVP required.

OUAB’s Flicks for Free featuring Remember the Titans

The true story of a championship football team overcoming racial tensions at a newly integrated Virginia high school in 1971 took place during the height of Coach Woody Hayes’ success at Ohio State.  Enjoy the inspirational story heralded as one of the greatest sports films ever made and get a look a rarely-viewed scene deleted from the final cut of the film in which the captains of the team discuss coming to OSU to play for Coach Hayes.

Handball Tournament

Woody’s favorite sport might have been football, but his favorite recreational activity was handball. Students are invited to the RPAC Racquetball Courts #1-2 on Wednesday, February 13 to learn how to play handball. Equipment will be provided and participants will take home giveaways, a handball glove, and a can of handballs.

 

Rose Bowl Cake Decorating Lessons

Celebrate Woody's eight trips to the Rose bowl at this cupcake decorating event. Students will learn techniques for decorating cupcakes, including creating roses and other design elements out of frosting. Participants will leave with special cupcakes and a mini decorating kit. Experience the legend of Woody Hayes during this dynamic 90-minute bus tour featuring many of the locations on and near campus that were significant to Coach Hayes and the people he touched as a coach, an educator, and a humanitarian.  Hear remarkable stories from some of the people who knew him best and get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center and the locker room at Ohio Stadium.  Tour participants will also receive a limited edition Woody Hayes block O ball cap and glasses.

Joining the Navy six months before Pearl Harbor, Woody was dedicated to serving his country. He served his country for five years, before being honorably discharged as a Lieutenant Commander.  Woody honored his military experience by naming plays and operating his team after notable military icons.  To honor Woody, and to thank the Navy ROTC students, the Office of Student Life will host a breakfast on Thursday, February 14.  This event is by invitation only.

  

Sit with a Legend

11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Thompson Library

Ever wonder what it’s like to sit with a legend? Students are invited to stop by the Anne & Woody Hayes exhibit on the 1st floor of the Thompson Library between 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 14 to get their picture taken sitting on the sofa from Woody Hayes’ office. Photo booth props and a Woody Hayes look-a-like will be available for this once in a lifetime photo op!

 

Push Woody’s Car Over the Border

1-6 p.m.

Are you a diehard Ohio State fan? Woody was a huge fan of both The Ohio State University and the state of Ohio. According to legend, Woody loved Ohio so much that when he ran out of gas in that state up North, he pushed his car across the border to fill up in O-H-I-O. Students can partake in this tradition on Thursday, February 14 in the Ohio Union Great Hall. Participants will get their picture taken pushing Woody’s car across the border and will go home with fun giveaways!

 

Woody Hayes Trivia Night

On Thursday, February 14, students are invited to a special trivia night to learn more about Ohio State, football across America, Woody and Anne Hayes, and much much more!

Register with friends to make a team, or register by yourself and get placed on a team and make new friends! Each team can have up to five players. To register, email poth.20@osu.edu.  Spots will be reserved on a first come, first serve basis. Register early to claim a spot!

Everyone is welcome to play, and no prior knowledge is necessary. Prizes will be awarded to winning teams, and refreshments will be available to all!

Pay Forward - Hospital Visit with Students

Woody Hayes was not only a legend for his ability to develop spectacular athletes, but also for his compassion for people. Woody was a regular in hospitals and would visit injured players, mingle with many patients, and show appreciation for staff. During Anne & Woody Hayes Celebration week, student athletes and leaders will honor Woody Hayes' charitable efforts by paying it forward at a local hospital.  By invitation only.
